    Notes
    1.
Arbuthnot's scribe used a caret to indicate the insertion. This letter is the original manuscript sent to Prior and is signed by Arbuthnot, but only the signature is in his hand. See the notes to 1712.0906.Ta for a discussion of the peculiarities of Arbuthnot's hand which are apparent in that letter.
    2.
A half-square has been drawn around "and", presumably to identify it as a catchword.
    3.
"Memoire of the trade 'twixt Brittain and France" is a four-page document which follows immediately in the manuscript volume and is attached to the letter itself with a metal clip.
